Players stand at the ends and reach across. Side room is for walking past, not for play. What the blower actually does
A playfield has several hundred small holes drilled through it and a fan underneath pushing air up through them. The puck rides on that cushion of air, which is why it glides almost frictionless off a light touch. The quality of the effect depends on total airflow and on how evenly it is distributed, and both are decided by the fan and the plenum design underneath.
An underpowered blower produces a puck that floats near the middle of the table where the air supply is strongest and drags at the corners where it is weakest. That is worse than it sounds, because the corners are exactly where defensive play happens. It is also unfixable: you cannot upgrade the blower in a cheap table, and the symptom is usually described as the table being "not very good" rather than diagnosed properly.
Test for it in one motion. Turn the blower on and give the puck the lightest possible push from one corner diagonally to the opposite corner. On a good table it travels the whole way and rebounds. On a poor one it slows visibly in the last third. That single test tells you more than any specification sheet.
The other three things that matter
- Playfield surface. A thick laminate over a stable substrate stays smooth. A thin printed film over particle board scuffs, and once it has scuffed the puck drags on that patch permanently. This is the second most common failure after the blower.
- Cabinet rigidity and levellers. Air hockey is played by people leaning hard on the rails. A cabinet that flexes puts the playfield out of flat, and a table that is not flat sends the puck to one side on every slow rally. Adjustable levellers on every leg are not optional on an uneven basement floor.
- Electronic scoring that works. Sounds trivial and is not. Optical sensors in the goal mouth miss scores on cheap tables, and an argument about whether that counted is a faster way to end a game than any amount of drag.
Maintenance, which is almost nothing
- Wipe the playfield with a soft damp cloth and a mild cleaner. Never anything abrasive: a scratch in the surface catches the puck forever.
- Vacuum the air holes occasionally. Dust and hair block them and produce dead patches. A hose attachment across the surface every few months is enough.
- Replace pucks and paddles when the edges chip. A chipped puck catches instead of gliding, and it costs a few dollars to fix.
- Turn the blower off when nobody is playing. It is a motor and it has a life, and leaving it running all evening while the table is not in use is how it ends early.
- Keep it out of high humidity. Laminate over substrate swells at the edges in a damp basement. A dehumidifier protects this alongside everything else in the room.
What to buy alongside
Spare pucks and paddles, because they get lost and chipped. Something soft under the standing positions if the floor is concrete: interlocking foam tiles are cheap, quiet and forgiving, and they matter in a room where children play standing up for an hour. And light that is not directly overhead behind a player, which throws a shadow onto the exact part of the table you are watching.
