For steel tip, 7 feet 9 and a quarter inches measured horizontally from the face of the board to the throw line, with the bullseye at 5 feet 8 inches. Soft tip is commonly 8 feet from the face of the board. Measure horizontally along the floor rather than diagonally from the board, which is the classic mistake.
Does standing position really matter?
Yes. A repeatable throw depends on standing the same way every time, and an unmarked floor lets your feet drift closer or further without you noticing. That is why the oche exists in the first place, and it is the cheapest improvement available to a new player.
Do dart mats reduce bounce outs?
They do not stop the dart bouncing off a wire, but they stop the consequences, which are bent points and a damaged floor. If bounce outs are frequent, the more likely causes are a board that moves on its mounting, a worn board that needs rotating, or darts landing at a shallow angle.
Should the board be rotated?
