Game Room Ceiling Height Requirements by Game
A pool table with a hanging light needs 8 ft of ceiling and 7 ft 6 in with a flush fixture. A dartboard needs 7 ft 6 in, shuffleboard 7 ft because play is horizontal, arcade basketball 8 ft 2 in because the ball has to arc, and a full swing golf simulator 9 ft as an absolute minimum.
Floor space is the measurement everybody takes and ceiling height is the one that quietly rules things out. It is also the only constraint in this hobby with no workaround: a short room can be solved with a shorter cue or a different game, and a low ceiling can only be solved by choosing a game that does not need the height.

Measure to the lowest permanent thing above the play area, not to the ceiling. Ductwork, beams, soffits, sprinkler heads and light fittings all count, and in a basement they are routinely six to twelve inches below the finished ceiling. Measure at several points, because a basement with a duct run down one side has two different working heights.
Where the pool table figure comes from

Take the pendant away and the requirement drops by about half a foot, which is why 7 ft 6 in works with recessed cans. What you lose is shadow control across the cloth, and the way to recover most of it is to run two rows of recessed cans either side of the table rather than one row down the centre, so light arrives at an angle from both sides and the shadows cancel. The games that low ceilings rule out
- Arcade basketball needs 8 ft 2 in. Most home units stand about 8 ft and the ball has to arc above the rim. A standard eight foot basement is not enough, and this is one of the few cases where the honest answer is no rather than yes with a compromise. The alternative is an arcade basketball cabinet, which needs no height at all.

What to do when you are short
- Change the fixture, not the game. Going from a pendant to recessed cans buys six inches and is the cheapest lever available. Six recessed cans for a small room or twelve for a full one.
- Look at what is actually low. A single duct run or soffit crossing one end of a room is often movable or can be boxed differently, and it is frequently the only thing failing the measurement.
- Move the table under the higher part. Basements very often have two working heights. The clearance band has to fit under the higher one, which is a floor plan problem rather than a ceiling one.
