What Size Pool Table Fits My Room?

The short answer

Measure your room wall to wall, then subtract two cue lengths from each dimension: what is left is the largest table cabinet you can have. With a 58 in cue a 7 ft table needs 13 ft 6 in by 16 ft 9 in, an 8 ft needs 14 ft by 17 ft 8 in, and a 9 ft needs 14 ft 6 in by 18 ft 8 in.

The room is the fixed input. The table is the variable. Almost everyone works this the wrong way round, falls for an 8 ft table in a showroom, and then discovers in their own basement that two of the four rails are unplayable. How the arithmetic works

Minimum room equals the table's outside cabinet dimension plus two cue lengths, in both directions. Reverse it and you get the rule for shopping from a room you already have:

Largest cabinet you can have = your room dimension minus two cue lengths. A 13 ft by 17 ft room with a 58 in cue leaves 40 in by 88 in of cabinet, which is a 6 ft table. The same room with a 52 in cue leaves 52 in by 100 in, which takes a full 8 ft.

That is the whole reason cue length is the biggest lever in a tight room: every inch you take off the cue gives back two inches in each direction. Six inches of cue is a foot of room. Full working is in the room size calculator and the room size chart.

Before you measure, here is the shape of the answer for the room sizes people usually have.

The pattern worth noticing: the 11 by 14 ft spare bedroom takes nothing with a full cue and very little with a short one. That room is not a pool room. It is an excellent dart room, a fine poker room, and it will take a 7 ft air hockey table comfortably. Choosing the right game for the room you have beats forcing the wrong one into it.

The four measurements people get wrong

  1. Measuring to the wall instead of to the obstruction. The boiler, the radiator, the stair stringer and the built-in shelf are all walls as far as a cue is concerned. Measure to the closest thing that is not moving.
  2. Forgetting the door swing. A door that opens into the room eats a quarter circle of clearance every time somebody uses it. Rehanging a door to swing outward is one of the cheapest fixes on this whole site.
  3. Ignoring the ceiling. Floor space is only half the problem. A hanging light needs the room to be eight feet tall, and a low soffit over one end of a basement takes that end of the table out of play. See the ceiling height chart.
  4. Assuming the listed size is the real size. An "8 ft" table can have a 44 by 88 in playing surface or a 46 by 92 in one. That is two inches of cabinet width and four inches of length, which is exactly the margin most tight rooms are living on.

  • Move the obstruction. Sometimes the problem is one shelf unit.

A 12 by 16 ft room does not take any standard table with a full 58 inch cue, because even a 7 ft table needs 13 ft 6 in by 16 ft 9 in. Drop to a 52 inch cue and a 7 ft table fits with room to spare. If you want to keep full length cues, a 6 ft compact table is the only option, and honestly a dartboard and a shuffleboard would use that room better.

How do I measure a room for a pool table?

Measure wall to wall at floor level in both directions, then measure again to the nearest permanent obstruction on each wall: a radiator, a stair stringer, a support column, a boiler, a shelf that is not moving. The second set of numbers is the one that counts. A doorway is not an obstruction if the door swings away, because a cue can extend through an open door.

Does turning the table really help?

Often, yes. Most rooms are not square and most people default to placing the table lengthwise along the longest wall. Because a table needs different amounts in each direction, rotating it ninety degrees changes which constraint binds. Are short cues a real solution or a compromise?

Both, and the distinction matters. A short cue is genuinely fine for the two or three shots per rack where the cue ball sits against one particular wall, which is why most home tables keep one or two in the rack. A short cue as the only cue in the room is a real downgrade: less mass, less control, and regular players will notice within an hour. Use them to solve one tight wall, not four.

Can I count a doorway or a hallway as clearance?

Yes, if the door swings away from the table or can be removed, and if nobody needs to walk through mid-game. A cue extending into an open doorway during a shot is entirely normal in a tight room. What you cannot do is count a doorway that opens inward, a stairwell you would fall down, or a walkway that is the only route to the rest of the house.

What is the smallest room that takes a real slate pool table?

With a full 58 inch cue, 13 ft 6 in by 16 ft 9 in for a 7 ft table. With a 52 inch cue, 12 ft 6 in by 15 ft 9 in. With a 48 inch cue, 11 ft 10 in by 15 ft 1 in.
