A surround protects the wall better, because it covers a wide ring around the board exactly where errant darts land. A cabinet protects a narrower area but closes over the board, hides it when guests are round, and usually includes a scoring surface. If wall damage is the worry, buy the surround. If the room has to look like something other than a dart room, buy the cabinet.

The room is not only a dart room. A cabinet closes over the board so a living room or an office reverts to looking normal, and the inside of the doors usually carries a chalk or dry wipe scoring surface, which saves finding somewhere to keep score.
Mount it into studs, not into plasterboard anchors alone. A cabinet with a heavy sisal board and two doors is a substantial weight, and it is hanging on a wall that gets hit repeatedly. Also allow for the door swing, which is wider than the cabinet, so a board in a corner may not open fully.

Your wall is plaster and your throws are not yet consistent. A surround puts a thick foam ring around the board covering exactly the area a missed dart lands in, which is a wider area than most cabinets cover. It is also cheaper, lighter, and easier to move if you rearrange the room.
It does nothing for the appearance of the room, and it does nothing to protect the floor from bounce outs. If the board goes above a hard floor, a mat under the throwing area saves both dart points and floorboards, and it also gives you a fixed reference for the throw line.

How much wall damage do darts really cause?
More than people expect, because most misses land in a ring several inches wide around the board and each one is a small hole in plaster. Over a season that ring becomes visibly pitted. This is the single most common regret with a board hung directly on a wall, and it is why surrounds exist.
Do I need a backboard as well?
A surround usually removes the need for one, but a backboard is useful if you want to mount the board on a wall you cannot drill, since you can fix the backboard once and hang the board on it. It also spreads the load on plasterboard, which matters with a heavy board.
Where should the board go in a room?
Somewhere with at least eight feet of clear throwing distance plus room to stand behind it, on a wall with no windows, mirrors, radiators or doorways in the firing line, and ideally not opposite a walkway. Lighting matters too: an unlit board casts shadows from the darts already in it.
Do cabinets fit any dartboard?
Most fit a standard 18 inch bristle board, but check the internal dimensions before buying, especially if you already own a board or want to fit an electronic one. Cabinets sized for an electronic board are a different product, since those boards are physically larger.
