Humidity is the whole game below grade
Everything expensive in a game room is hygroscopic. Billiard cloth is wool or a wool blend and it absorbs water out of the air, which is why a table in a damp basement plays slow and grabby and why the ball checks up where it used to run. A shuffleboard cradle is solid hardwood and it crowns and dips as it takes on and gives off moisture, which is precisely what the climatic adjusters on a good board exist to correct. A sisal dartboard swells and stops closing over dart holes. The wooden frame under slate moves enough over a season to put a table out of level.
None of that fails suddenly, which is why it gets blamed on the equipment. It degrades over a winter. A 50 pint dehumidifier set to 45 to 50 percent and drained continuously to a floor drain or a condensate pump costs about $254 in this build and protects several thousand dollars of equipment. The practical reading of that table for a basement: if you have 8 ft, hang a pendant and stop reading. If you have 7.5 ft, use recessed cans in two rows either side of the table rather than one row down the middle, because two rows at an angle is what recovers the shadow control the pendant would have given you. Below that, the table still works, the light just stops being ideal, and you should reconsider whether pool is the right anchor game at all: darts and shuffleboard both work in ceilings that pool struggles with.
The stairs conversation, before you order
This is the question that catches basement buyers, and it is entirely avoidable. Ask the seller or the installer these four things, and send photographs when you book rather than on the day:
- Is the slate three-piece? If a table is advertised with a one-piece slate bed, it is a single sheet of roughly 400 lb that cannot turn a corner. Almost no home table uses one, but budget imports occasionally do, and this is the fastest way to buy a table that cannot physically reach your basement.
- How wide is the narrowest point on the route? Measure the stair, the turn at the bottom and any doorway. Slate sections for a 7 ft table are roughly 40 in on the long edge.
- Is there a landing or a switchback? A straight flight is routine. A switchback with a tight quarter-turn is where surcharges and refusals come from.
- What is the surcharge, and is it per flight or per section? Typically $50 to $200 for a flight, but ask, because the same word means different things to different installers.
What a slab does to the flooring choice
Concrete is cold, never quite flat, and occasionally damp from below through capillary action even when nothing is visibly wet. That eliminates solid hardwood, which moves; broadloom carpet with a pad, which holds water indefinitely and grows things; and flexible sheet vinyl, which telegraphs every dip in the slab within a year.
What is left is the pairing in this build: rigid-core SPC vinyl plank for the walkways and the bar area, at about $951 for a mid-sized room, and commercial carpet tile under the table itself. Rigid core is the important word: it bridges small unevenness rather than following it, and it is waterproof rather than water-resistant, so a failed supply line is a mopping job. Should I finish the basement before or after buying the table?

The pendant box in particular has to be centred on where the table will actually sit rather than on the centre of the room, and those are almost never the same point. Mark the table footprint in tape on the subfloor and drop a plumb line before anyone cuts a hole in the ceiling.
Does a basement game room need a dedicated circuit?
It depends on what is going in it. A pool table, a light and a dehumidifier run happily on an existing 15 A basement circuit. Add a kegerator, a beverage fridge and two arcade cabinets and you will trip it, usually on the evening you have people over, because a compressor draws a large starting surge. If arcade or bar equipment is in the plan at any point, run the circuit while the ceiling is open. It costs $200 to $600 then and considerably more later.
Is carpet or vinyl plank better in a basement game room?
Both, in different places. Rigid-core vinyl plank belongs in walkways and the bar area, because it is genuinely waterproof and it bridges the small unevenness in a slab rather than telegraphing it.
