Game Room Humidity and Climate Control
Hold a game room between 45 and 55 percent relative humidity, and hold it steady. Below grade that almost always means a dehumidifier running continuously with a drain, because an unconditioned basement sits at 60 to 75 percent in a warm season, which slackens cloth, swells the hardwood frame under a slate table and moves the level an installer set.
This is the guide nobody reads before buying a table and everybody reads about eighteen months afterwards, when the cloth has gone slow, the level has drifted and a dartboard has gone hard on one side. Humidity is the quietest expensive problem in a game room. Nothing breaks, nothing makes a noise, and everything gradually gets worse in ways that are easy to blame on the equipment.
Target 45 to 55 percent relative humidity, and prioritise stability over the exact number. A room that sits steadily at 58 percent is kinder to equipment than one that swings between 40 and 70 across a year. Wood, cloth and sisal all move with moisture, and it is the movement that opens joints, slackens weave and shifts a levelled frame.
What humidity actually does to each thing in the room

Read that table with the shuffleboard row in mind. A hardwood shuffleboard playfield is the most humidity-sensitive expensive object anyone puts in a game room, and a cupped board is not repairable in any economical way. Measure before you spend
Put a hygrometer in the room and read it for two weeks before buying anything. It costs almost nothing and it prevents both of the expensive mistakes: assuming a basement is fine because it does not smell damp, and buying a large dehumidifier for a room that was already at 50 percent.
Read it at three points in the day, and pay particular attention to the reading in the warm part of a humid afternoon. Basements are worst when the outside air is warmest and wettest, because warm moist air meeting cool foundation walls is where condensation happens. A basement that reads 50 percent on a cold morning can be at 70 percent that same afternoon.
The dehumidifier
Sizing
For a basement game room, a 50-pint class unit such as the Midea 50-pint covers most spaces up to roughly 1,000 to 1,500 sq ft at typical basement damp levels. Undersizing is the common error and it is counterintuitive: a small unit runs continuously without ever hitting the setpoint and uses more electricity than a larger unit that pulls the room down and then cycles.
Size to the whole space rather than to the part of it the table occupies. A dehumidifier is conditioning the air in the room, and air does not respect the layout.
Siting and draining
- Plumb the drain. A unit with a bucket that fills every day gets emptied for three weeks and then stops being emptied. Run the hose to a floor drain, a sump or a condensate pump. This single decision is what separates a dehumidifier that works from one that sits in a corner.
- Give it air on all sides, and keep it off a wall and out of a cupboard.
- Do not put it next to the table. It is a noise source and a heat source, and it does not need to be near the thing it is protecting.
- Set it and leave it. Around 50 percent, running year round below grade. The standby cost is far lower than a re-cloth.
- Clean the filter on the schedule in the manual. A blocked filter halves the capacity you paid for.
Temperature matters too
Most compressor dehumidifiers lose capacity below about 65F and some ice up in a cold basement. A room that is both cold and damp needs either a low-temperature-rated unit or a bit of heat, and running a small amount of heat is often the cheaper fix because warm air holds moisture the dehumidifier can then remove.
Reducing the moisture at source
A dehumidifier that is fighting an active water problem will run forever and lose. Deal with the source first, because all of this is cheaper than the appliance.
- Grade and gutters. Downspouts discharging next to the foundation and soil that slopes toward the house are the two biggest and cheapest fixes available.
- Vapour from the slab. A bare concrete slab passes moisture continuously. A floor with an underlayment or a vapour barrier under it changes the room, which is one reason the flooring guide pushes so hard against laying carpet directly on concrete.
- Uninsulated cold surfaces. Cold pipes and uninsulated rim joists condense. Wrapping them removes a water source you can otherwise never find.
- Dryer venting. A basement laundry vented badly puts a remarkable amount of water into the air.
The dry-season problem
Everything above is about damp, because damp is the common case. The opposite case is real too. A heated house in a cold dry climate can fall below 30 percent relative humidity for months, and at that level a sisal dartboard goes hard and bounces out, cabinet joints open and a solid wood shuffleboard can check its finish. If the room drops that low, a humidifier is the same argument in reverse, and the target band does not change.
The seasonal routine
- At the start of the heating season, check the hygrometer, check the table level with a machinist level , and correct with shims if needed. This is the single most likely moment in the year for a table to have moved.
- At the end of the heating season, repeat. The floor moves back.
- Through the humid months, confirm the dehumidifier is actually running and draining, and clean the filter.
- Any time the cloth feels damp or slow, treat it as a humidity reading rather than a cloth problem, and check the hygrometer before doing anything to the table.

Where this sits in the budget
A dehumidifier is roughly the same money as a decent set of balls and a fraction of one re-clothing. It protects the cloth, the frame, the level, the cues, the dartboard and any wooden cabinet in the room simultaneously. In a below-grade room it is the highest-return purchase in the whole project after the light over the table, which is why it appears as a line item in the mid-range buildout and the full buildout rather than as an optional extra.

A garage is the hardest case because it swings in both temperature and humidity, and an uninsulated slab wicks moisture continuously. Insulating and sealing come before any equipment, and MDF equipment in an unconditioned garage has a short life.
