Brightness, and how to hit the number
The Billiard Congress of America specifies 520 lux on the playing surface for tournament play, which is about 48 foot-candles. Home play is comfortable from roughly 350 lux. You do not need a light meter to land in that range: three shades with 800 to 1,000 lumen bulbs each at the correct height gets a 7 or 8 ft table there.
Two things ruin it more often than insufficient lumens. The first is a fixture hung too high, so the light spreads across the room rather than onto the cloth. The second is a bare bulb with no shade, which puts glare directly into a player eye at exactly the height they are aiming from. Shades exist to point light down and to hide the source, and a fixture without them is worse than no fixture at all.
What to do with a low ceiling
A hanging fixture needs the room to be about 8 ft tall. The bed sits about 31 in up, the shade hangs 30 to 36 in above that, and you still need to lift a cue butt on a rail shot. If your ceiling is lower than that, you have three options in increasing order of compromise.
- Shorten the drop to 30 inches above the cloth rather than 33 or 36. That is the bottom of the acceptable range rather than a violation of it, and it buys back a few inches without hurting the light.
- Switch to recessed downlights. Four to six 6 inch canless downlights or a 12 pack for a whole room , placed in a rectangle above the table edges rather than in one line down the centre. That drops the working ceiling minimum to about 7 ft 6 in. You lose shadow control, which is a real loss, but a well-planned downlight array beats a pendant you keep hitting.
- Use a linear shop light above the table. A 4 ft linkable LED shop light pair running parallel above the long rails is the cheap, ugly, effective answer for an unfinished basement or a garage, and it puts genuinely more light on the cloth than most decorative fixtures.

Wiring, and the one thing to decide before drywall
A pool table light wants to be centred over the table, and the table position is set by the clearance math rather than by the room centre. Those two points are usually not the same. Work out the table position with the room size calculator before the ceiling box goes in, because moving a junction box after drywall is a patch and a repaint.
Put the fixture on its own switch, and if you can, on a dimmer. A table light at full brightness is right for playing and wrong for a room where people are also sitting and talking. What colour temperature is best over a pool table?
