Game Room Lighting Guide: Table Light, Ambient and Layers
Hang a pool table pendant so the bottom of the shade sits 30 to 36 in above the cloth, which is 5 ft 1 in to 5 ft 7 in from the floor. Light the room itself to about 25 lumens per square foot on a separate dimmable circuit, and keep everything in the room at one colour temperature between 3000K and 4000K.
Lighting is the most underfunded item in this entire hobby and the one with the highest ratio of improvement to cost. A fixture over a pool table costs a twentieth of the table and changes how it plays. Meanwhile a room lit only from the ceiling puts the player's own shadow across the shot line, every shot, forever, and nobody ever quite works out why the expensive table feels unsatisfying to play on.
The reason a table needs its own light is geometry, not brightness. A ceiling fixture is behind you when you are down on a shot, so your own body blocks it and casts a shadow exactly where you are aiming. A fixture over the table sits between you and the cloth, so there is nothing left to shadow. You cannot fix this with more ceiling lights. You fix it by moving the light.
Layer one: the light over the table
Height
The bottom of the shade goes 30 to 36 in above the cloth. With a standard 31 in bed height, that puts it 5 ft 1 in to 5 ft 7 in from the floor.
Go lower and two things happen: tall players catch it with a raised cue butt, and the pool of light narrows so the ends of the table fall away. Go higher and the light spreads across the room, which is the exact failure mode you hung a pendant to avoid. Fixture length, which matters more than shade count

The number people shop on is shade count and the number that decides the result is overall length. A fixture that covers most of the playing surface lights the ends as well as the middle; a short fixture on a long table produces a bright centre and two dim ends, which is worse than a single well-placed lamp because it looks correct and plays badly.
For a 7 or 8 ft table a three-shade bar such as the Wellmet 59 in three-shade or the mirrea 59 in pendant is the standard answer at the standard length. Where the ceiling box is not exactly centred on the table, an adjustable four-head fixture lets you aim the heads and rescue the geometry without moving the box, which is worth knowing before you book an electrician. Centring, and the mistake that is expensive to fix
The ceiling box has to be centred over where the table will actually stand, not over the centre of the room. Those are almost never the same point, because clearance requirements push a table off centre in most real rooms. Mark the table footprint on the floor in painter's tape, drop a plumb line, and put the box on that point. Getting this wrong means either an off-centre light forever or an electrician back in a finished ceiling.
Brightness on the cloth: tournament standards call for around 520 lux on the playing surface, and about 350 lux is comfortable at home. In practical terms a three-shade fixture with decent lamps clears the home figure easily, so this is not usually a constraint. Position is the constraint.
Layer two: ambient light
Ambient lighting is what stops the room feeling like an interrogation. Target about 25 lumens per square foot, with 20 as a dim minimum and 30 for a bright room. Note this is lumens, not watts, and it is per square foot of floor, not per fixture.

In a basement with a finished ceiling, recessed cans are the usual answer, and a six-pack or twelve-pack of 6 in LED cans covers a typical room for less than the cost of the pendant. In an unfinished basement with exposed joists, linkable LED shop lights are unglamorous, genuinely bright and cost almost nothing, and they are a completely reasonable interim answer while the room is being built.
Spacing rule of thumb for cans: space them roughly the ceiling height apart, so about 8 ft apart on an 8 ft ceiling, and keep them 2 to 3 ft off the walls. Even spacing matters more than quantity, because a room with the right total lumens delivered from three points has bright patches and dark corners.
Layer three: accent and mood
This is the layer that makes a game room feel like a destination rather than a basement with equipment in it, and it is also the cheapest layer.
- Perimeter strip. A run of LED strip in a ceiling cove, under a bar overhang, or behind a screen. Behind a screen it does double duty as bias lighting and genuinely reduces eye strain in a dark room.
- Signage. A neon-style sign or a game room sign gives the room a focal point that is not the equipment.
- Bar lighting. Pendants over a bar top at 30 to 36 in above the surface, on the dimmable circuit.
Lighting the other games
- Dartboard. A board lit from the room throws the player's shadow onto the board, and the shadow lands on the exact part of the board being aimed at. A ring light such as the Corona Vision lights the board from all round its own circumference and eliminates the shadow entirely, which is the single most noticeable upgrade a dart setup can have. - Shuffleboard. Even light along the whole board length, which usually means a linear fixture rather than a point source. A spot in the middle produces glare on the polished board and dark ends.
- Arcade and pinball. These make their own light and are best in a dimmer part of the room. Avoid putting a bright can directly above a cabinet, because glass reflects it straight back at the player.
- Screens and projectors. A projector needs the ability to go properly dark, which is the argument for zoned switching rather than one circuit for the whole room. Keep the screen off the wall opposite any window.
Colour temperature and CRI
Pick one colour temperature between 3000K and 4000K and use it everywhere, including the pendant, the cans and the bar. Mixed temperatures in a single room read as a mistake even to people who could not name what is wrong. 3000K is warm and bar-like, 4000K is neutral and sharper for play, and 3500K splits the difference well in a room that does both.
Colour rendering index matters more than people expect here, because cloth colour, ball colour and the difference between a solid and a stripe at the far end of the table all depend on it. Look for CRI 90 or better on the table fixture in particular. Cheap high-lumen lamps often sit at CRI 80, which is fine in a garage and visibly flat over green cloth.
Switching and circuits
Plan for three switches: ambient on a dimmer, the table pendant on its own switch, and accent on a third. That layout lets you drop the room for a film while the table stays properly lit, and it is nearly free to specify before the walls are closed and annoying to add afterwards. Check dimmer and lamp compatibility, because mismatched LED and dimmer is the most common cause of flicker.

The order to do it in
- Mark the table footprint on the floor in tape, before anything else.
- Site the ceiling box on the plumb line from the centre of that footprint.
- Lay out ambient cans on an even grid, avoiding the table footprint itself.
- Run the switching: ambient dimmed, pendant separate, accent separate.
- Lay the floor, then install the table, then hang the pendant to the cloth.
Hanging the pendant last is deliberate. The correct height is measured from the cloth, and the cloth does not exist until the table is installed and levelled.

How bright should a game room be?
Roughly 20 to 30 lumens per square foot of ambient light, with 25 as the working target, before any task light over a table. A 12 by 16 ft room therefore wants around 4,800 lumens of general lighting, which is about six 800-lumen recessed cans. The table light is on top of that and is not part of the calculation.
What colour temperature is best for a game room?
Around 3000K to 4000K. Under 3000K the room feels like a lounge and cloth colours go muddy, and above 4000K it starts feeling like a workshop. 3500K is a good compromise for a room that is both a bar and a place people compete in. What matters most is picking one temperature and using it everywhere, because mixed temperatures in one room look like a mistake even when nobody can name why.
Should game room lights be dimmable?
The ambient lighting yes, the table light no. You want to drop the room for a film and keep the table lit properly for play, and those are different circuits doing different jobs. Put ambient on a dimmer, put the table pendant on its own switch, and make sure the dimmer and the bulbs are compatible or you will get flicker.
