Ping Pong Conversion Top vs Dedicated Table

Updated 2026-08-17 Researched from published specs, not tested in person
The short answer

Buy a conversion top if the room already has a pool table or a long dining table, since it costs about a third as much and takes no additional floor. Buy a dedicated folding table if it does not, because buying a base to put a top on erases the saving. A pool table is the ideal base because its bed sits around 31 inches against a regulation table tennis height of 30.

This comparison has an unusually clean answer and it depends entirely on one thing you already know: whether the room contains something to put a top on. If it does, a conversion top is one of the few genuinely free lunches in a game room. If it does not, the comparison is not close and the dedicated table wins.

A conversion top only makes sense on a base you already own. A pool table bed at about 31 inches or a dining table at 29 to 30 inches both land close to the regulation 30 inch playing height. Buying trestles or a folding table to put a top on costs as much as a dedicated table and plays worse.

The pool table row is not a coincidence: both games settled on similar heights because both are played standing by adults. That one inch of difference is why conversion tops exist and why they are nearly always marketed with a pool table in mind.

Protecting the pool table underneath

Billiard cloth is a wool or wool blend weave stretched over slate, and it is damaged by concentrated weight and by grit dragged across it. A conversion top is capable of both. The routine that prevents it:

  1. Put the fitted cover on first. A table cover under the top is a second layer between hard edges and cloth for forty three dollars.
  2. Choose a top with padded contact points. The STIGA premium top is better here than most, and on a slate table the padding pays for itself against a $300 re-cloth.
  3. Lift, never slide. Two people, one per half, lifting clear of the rails. Sliding is what drags grit across cloth.
  4. Land the contact points on the rails, which are structural, rather than on the bed, which is the stretched surface you paid an installer to level.
  5. Check the underside before each use. Anything embedded in the pads is now an abrasive.
The economics are not subtle. A re-cloth is $300 to $500. A cover is forty three dollars. This is the entire reason conversion tops have a mixed reputation: not because the tops are bad, but because they get slid on and off expensive cloth by people who did not know.

Room, which is the same either way

Both need about 11 ft by 19 ft for real play, allowing five feet behind each end for a rally. The relevant point for a conversion top is that a 7 ft pool table already needs 13 ft 6 in by 16 ft 9 in, so a room that properly takes the pool table usually takes the table tennis too.

Ceiling height is the exception worth checking separately. Table tennis wants around 7 ft 6 in minimum, and if a pendant hangs over the pool table it will be directly in the path of a rally. A fixture on an adjustable chain or a rise and fall mechanism is worth the small premium in a room that does both. Figures in the ceiling height chart.

What to buy

  • Room has a pool table: the JOOLA conversion top for value or the STIGA premium if the table under it is expensive and the padding matters.
  • Room has no base: the JOOLA Inside 13 , which is a full size folding table at a genuine 13 mm and rolls against a wall in under a minute.
  • You play properly: the Inside Professional , where the thicker top gives a more consistent bounce across the whole surface.
  • The table might live outdoors: the JOOLA NOVA , weatherproof, which bounces slightly differently and survives being left out.
  • Either way, four paddles: the STIGA four-player set , because doubles is what a household actually plays.

Frequently asked questions

Is a ping pong conversion top as good as a real table?

Close, with two honest gaps. The playing height depends on what is underneath rather than being fixed by the manufacturer, and the top is usually thinner than a good dedicated table so the bounce is slightly less lively. Against that, a conversion top costs about a third as much if you already own a base and takes no additional floor space at all. For family play the difference is small; for serious practice, buy the dedicated table.

Will a conversion top damage a pool table?

It can, and the two risks are weight concentrated on the rails and grit trapped underneath. Both are manageable: choose a top with padded contact points, put the fitted table cover on first, lift the top on and off rather than sliding it, land the contact points on the rails rather than the bed, and check the underside for anything abrasive before each use. Thousands of people run conversion tops on slate tables without incident.

What height do you need under a conversion top?

A regulation table tennis table is 30 inches high, so the base plus the top thickness should land close to that. A pool table bed sits around 31 inches, which is why a pool table is the ideal base. A dining table at 29 to 30 inches also works. Trestles and folding tables vary from 28 to 36 inches and are usually wrong, which changes the game more than the surface does.

Which is cheaper overall?

A conversion top, if you already own a suitable base, and a dedicated table if you do not. A top on its own is a fraction of the cost of a folding table, and buying something to put it on immediately erases that advantage. If the room has no pool table or long dining table, buy a dedicated folding table and skip this comparison.

Does a folding table play worse than a fixed one?

Slightly, and much less than people fear. The hinge means the two halves can sit a fraction out of plane with each other, which shows up as a small inconsistency near the net rather than as a dead table. Good folding tables lock the halves firmly and the difference is not noticeable in home play. What folding buys is enormous: a permanent 45 square foot commitment becomes a two foot strip against a wall.

Can two people lift a conversion top?

Two people comfortably, one person with difficulty. A full size top typically weighs 60 to 110 lb and folds in the middle, so each half is a manageable carry. That is worth checking before buying: a top that lives leaning against a wall and needs two people to set up gets used far less often than a table that unfolds on its own wheels.

How we work: we compare published manufacturer dimensions, the governing playing standards for each game, and reviews from owners who live with the equipment. We do not test games in person, and we say so on every page. Clearance figures here are researched guidance for planning a room, not professional advice: measure your own space, and have a slate table delivered, assembled and levelled by an installer rather than moving it yourself.
