Ceiling height, which people underestimate
7 ft 6 in is the minimum and 8 ft 6 in is comfortable. A lob needs headroom, and a low ceiling changes which shots are legal in practice. Two specific things suffer under a low ceiling. A lob, which is a legitimate and enjoyable defensive shot, becomes impossible, which removes a whole dimension of the game. And serving becomes awkward, because a legal serve requires the ball to be thrown up at least 16 cm from an open palm before it is struck, and doing that with a raised hand under a seven foot ceiling is tight.
A basement at seven feet is playable and it plays a flatter, more limited version of the sport. If the room also has a pendant hanging over a pool table, that fixture will be in the way of a rally, which is worth planning around rather than discovering. - 13 mm. The entry point for a genuine playing surface, and what most good value folding tables use.
- 16 to 19 mm. The home standard worth paying for. Consistent across the whole surface and heavy enough to stay put.
- 22 to 25 mm. Competition specification. Genuinely better, and heavy enough that folding stops being a one person job.
