The short answer

A game room needs roughly 20 to 30 lumens per square foot of ambient ceiling light, so a 240 sq ft room wants about 4,800 to 7,200 lumens. Every playing surface needs a dedicated fixture on top of that, because ambient light from behind a player throws their own shadow across the shot.

Lighting is the cheapest thing in a game room that changes how the games play, and it is the one people leave to a single fixture in the middle of the ceiling. That fixture is behind you when you lean over a table, which means your own shadow lands exactly where the aiming line is. Game rooms need layers, and the layers do different jobs.

Ambient light: 20 to 30 lumens per square foot across the ceiling. Task light: a dedicated fixture directly above each playing surface, aimed down. The two are not substitutes, and no amount of the first replaces the second.

The four zones and what each one needs

Layer one: ambient

Spread across the ceiling, not concentrated in the middle. Recessed downlights on a grid are the standard answer because they are shallow, they sit flush, and they do not compete with a pendant over the table. A six pack of 6 inch canless downlights lights a small room, and a twelve pack covers most full sized rec rooms. Put them on a dimmer, because the same room has to work for a game and for a film.

In an unfinished basement or a garage conversion, skip the decorative route entirely. Linkable 4 ft LED shop lights put more usable light on a playing surface per dollar than anything else, they chain together off one outlet, and in a room with exposed joists they look intentional rather than cheap.

Layer two: the table

This is the layer that changes the game. A dedicated fixture directly over the playing surface, with shades that point light down and hide the source from a player standing at the rail.

The rules are specific: the bottom of the shade sits 30 to 36 inches above the cloth, and the fixture wants to be about two thirds of the playing surface length so both ends of the table are lit evenly. Layer three: the dart lane

Darts has the worst lighting problem in the room and the cheapest fix. The thrower stands roughly eight feet back, so any ceiling light between them and the board puts their shadow on the target. Worse, the darts already in the board cast shadows over the segments you are aiming at.

A dedicated ring light such as the Corona Vision system surrounds the board face and lights it from every direction at once, which removes both problems. Colour temperature, one rule: keep every play-area source at the same temperature, somewhere between 3000 K and 4000 K. Mismatched sources look wrong even when nobody can articulate why, and warm light over green cloth reads muddy. The bar and seating can go warmer at 2700 K on purpose, because that reads as a different zone.

Layer four: the room feeling like a room

Accent light is not necessary and it is what people remember. LED strip behind a bar top or under a shelf fills the gap between the bright play area and a dark corner, and it costs almost nothing. A neon-style sign or a game room sign does the same job as wall art that also emits light, which is a good trade in a room where wall space is limited by a dart lane and a cue rack.

Keep accent lighting off the playing surfaces. Coloured light on green cloth changes how the balls read, and a strip light at eye level across a dart lane is a genuine distraction.

Wiring it, and the decision to make before drywall

Three switches, minimum: ambient on a dimmer, table light on its own switch, accent on a third. That sounds like a lot until the first evening when somebody wants the film on and the pool table light off.

The one irreversible decision is the ceiling box for the table light, which must sit over where the table will actually be, and the table position comes from the clearance math rather than from the room centre. How do I light a dartboard properly?

From both sides and slightly above, never from behind the thrower. A dedicated ring light that surrounds the board face removes both the thrower shadow and the shadows the darts already in the board cast on the ones you are aiming at. The cheap version is a pair of lights placed high on either side. Overhead room lighting alone always leaves the board partly shadowed.

What lighting works in a basement with a low ceiling?

Canless recessed downlights, which fit into a shallow ceiling void and sit flush, plus a linear LED fixture over the table if a pendant will not clear. Recessed fixtures buy back about six inches of headroom against a hanging light.
