The short answer

Condition the garage before buying any equipment. Insulate the walls, ceiling and especially the garage door, seal the slab, and add heating and cooling. Until that is done, choose games that tolerate temperature and humidity swings, meaning air hockey, foosball and arcade cabinets rather than a slate table, a shuffleboard or anything made of MDF.

A garage is the most tempting game room space in most houses and the most demanding. It usually has more floor area than any room inside, a higher ceiling, a wide door that solves every delivery problem, and a concrete slab that carries any weight you can put on it. It also swings thirty degrees with the weather and breathes moisture through an uninsulated slab, and those two facts decide the whole project.

Condition the space first, then buy the games. The order matters because every wooden thing in a game room, including a slate table's frame, a shuffleboard's playfield, a dartboard's sisal and every MDF cabinet, responds to temperature and humidity swings. A conditioned garage is an excellent game room. An unconditioned one is an equipment graveyard with good floor area.

What a garage is genuinely good at

  • Floor area. A single-car garage is commonly 12 by 22 ft and a double is often 20 by 20 ft or better, which comfortably clears the 13 ft 6 in by 16 ft 9 in a 7 ft table needs and frequently the 14 ft by 17 ft 8 in an 8 ft table needs.
  • Ceiling height. Often higher than a basement and usually free of the ducts and soffits that ruin basement height, which puts a golf simulator or arcade basketball genuinely on the table. See the ceiling height guide.
  • Access. A garage door removes every stairs surcharge, every tight turn and every failed delivery. Slate sections, arcade cabinets and a 12 ft shuffleboard all simply roll in.
  • Load. A slab carries anything a game room contains without a structural conversation, which is a real advantage over a framed floor.
  • Noise. Usually further from bedrooms than a basement is, and often with a party wall on one side only.

What it is bad at, and what to do about each

Temperature

The core problem. An uninsulated garage tracks the outside temperature with a small delay, which means both extremes of the year and a large daily swing in between. Every swing in temperature drives a swing in relative humidity, and it is that cycling rather than any single reading that moves wood.

The fix is insulation in the walls and ceiling, and then the garage door, which is the biggest uninsulated surface in the room by a wide margin and the one most often skipped. An insulated door kit is inexpensive relative to what it does. After insulation, a mini-split heat pump is the right heating and cooling answer for most conversions, because it does both jobs, it is efficient and it dehumidifies while it cools.

Moisture from the slab

Bare concrete passes moisture continuously, whether or not it ever looks wet. Tape a square of plastic sheet tightly to the slab, leave it two days, and if there is condensation underneath you have confirmed it. Sealing the slab with a concrete sealer or an epoxy coating, and then using a floor system with a vapour barrier, is what stops that reaching the room. Air sealing

A garage typically has gaps at the door, at the top plate and around penetrations. Sealing them is cheap and it multiplies the value of the insulation. It also keeps the room cleaner, which matters more than it sounds when the space is full of felt, sisal and electronics.

The car, and what you are giving up

Worth saying plainly because it is the decision people regret rather than the construction. A converted garage is generally not still a garage. Half-measures where the table is pushed to one side and the car comes back in winter do not work: a pool table cannot be moved without being dismantled, and dust and exhaust are bad for everything in the room. Decide fully.

The order of work

  1. Call the building department. Electrical, heating appliances, egress and the fire separation between a garage and a house are all commonly regulated, and rules vary. This call is free and unpermitted work is expensive later.
  2. Test the slab for moisture and check the fall. Many garage slabs slope toward the door on purpose, which is worth knowing before you plan a level floor.
  3. Deal with water at source. Grading, gutters, and the threshold at the door.
  4. Electrical, while everything is open. Dedicated circuits for cabinets and any bar refrigeration, outlets where equipment will stand, and the ceiling box centred on where the table will go rather than on the centre of the room. See electrical planning.
  5. Insulate walls, ceiling and the garage door. Air seal as you go.
  6. Finish the walls and ceiling, if you are finishing them. Painted plywood or drywall both work, and this is the cheapest moment to add any sound work, covered in soundproofing.
  7. Seal the slab, then lay the floor.
  8. Install heating and cooling, then run it for a couple of weeks and watch a hygrometer before anything wooden arrives.
  9. Lighting.
  10. Then the games.

Flooring, specifically for a garage

Rolled rubber is the strongest default. It tolerates a temperature swing better than any other option, it is quiet, it is forgiving of a slab that is not perfectly flat, and it is close to indestructible. Interlocking foam tile is the cheap fast version and is fine under light equipment, though it dents permanently under a heavy table leg.

If the garage is genuinely conditioned, a rigid core SPC vinyl plank over an underlayment with a vapour barrier makes the room read as a finished space rather than as a garage, and SPC is the right variant because it is more dimensionally stable across a temperature range than flexible LVP. A large area rug in the seating zone softens a hard room considerably for very little money.

The pattern: metal, plastic and glass tolerate a garage, and wood, sisal and cloth do not. That gives an obvious staging strategy. Start with the games in the first column while the conversion is in progress, and add the wooden ones once the room holds a steady temperature and a steady 45 to 55 percent relative humidity, which is the band explained in humidity and climate control.

Games are on top of all of that. Lighting a garage conversion

Garages are usually badly lit and it is the cheapest thing to fix. Linkable LED shop lights are unglamorous, genuinely bright and cost very little, and they are a completely reasonable permanent answer in a workshop-flavoured room. If the conversion is going further, a grid of recessed LED cans in a finished ceiling plus a pendant over the table is the proper version. Frequently asked questions

Can you put a pool table in a garage?

In a conditioned, insulated garage, yes. In an unconditioned one, a slate table will survive but the cloth, the hardwood frame and the level will fight you every season, and an MDF table will not last. The slate itself is indifferent to temperature and humidity. Everything wrapped around it is not, which is why conditioning comes before equipment rather than after.
